"We've taken a position that we don't want new mining, new coal mining on the conservation estate but otherwise we've talked very firmly about the need to transition those economies and those industries rather than put bans in place. "Every decision we take case by case. We recognise [coal mining]'s not our future but we have to transition. Particularly for those areas that have long had reliance on that part of our economy."

These licence areas are a little bit different to other areas in West Ireland as there is more data to start with,” he explains. “Clearly we are at a very early stage in the exploration cycle, however, equally clearly we have a well-defined work programme to de-risk the play.” The cost of maturing theses to drillable status is low, says Mackay, and Europa could start dri...

It involved Hong Kong crooks obtaining an Aussie Financial Services Licence & using it to siphon $175m to offshore tax havens, never to be seen again! So what resources are they devoting to mining the AUSTRAC data now? I suggested 500-1000 volunteers, doing it for no up-front payment, whatsoever. What's wrong with that?

At the time of the disaster, the platform accounted for approximately ten percent of North Sea oil and gas production, and was the worst offshore oil disaster in terms of lives lost and industry impact. A large fixed platform, Piper Alpha was situated on the Piper oilfield, approximately 120 miles (193 km) northeast of Aberdeen in 474 feet (144 m) of water, and comprised four modules separated by firewalls.[7] The platform was constructed by McDermott Engineering at Ardersier and UIE at Cherbourg, with the sections united at Ardersier before tow out during 1975, with production commencing in late 1976. For safety reasons the modules were organised so that the most dangerous operations were distant from the personnel areas. The conversion from oil to gas broke this safety concept, with the result that sensitive areas were brought together, for example, the gas compression next to the control room, which played a role in the accident. It produced crude oil and natural gas from 24 wells for delivery to the Flotta oil terminal on Orkney and to other installations by three separate pipelines. At the time of the disaster, Piper was one of the heaviest platforms (along with Magnus and Brae B) operating in the North Sea.

Drilling at Europa Oil & Gas Holdings PLC’s (LON:EOG) Corrib gas field licences could start sooner than planned, Europa tells Proactive Investors. “Everyone tends to think Offshore West Ireland is some wild frontier,” says chief executive Hugh Mackay. “But these particular licenses in the Slyne Basin next to the Corrib gas field are at the other end of the spectrum.” “In this instance we know exactly what we’re going for. These licence areas are a little bit different to other areas in West Ireland as there is more data to start with,” he explains. “Clearly we are at a very early stage in the exploration cycle, however, equally clearly we have a well-defined work programme to de-risk the play.” The cost of maturing theses to drillable status is low, says Mackay, and Europa could start drilling sooner than initially planned. Due to shallow water, the group also expects drilling cost to be a lot lower, and historic data also pushed down costs. Europa has now been granted three years to understand the geology and the option to apply to the Irish government for drilling rights. The next phase of work is expected to see the reprocessing of the historic 3D seismic data.

You don’t get much for a pound these days but Europa Oil & Gas (Holdings) PLC (LON:EOG) has shelled out a nominal quid for Shale Petroleum (UK) Limited. With it come Shale’s equity interests in the PEDL299 and PEDL343 exploration licences awarded in the 14th UK Landward licensing round, thus doubling Europa’s stakes in those licences to 33.32% and 45.0% respectively. Shale’s parent company has changed strategy in the wake of the precipitous decline in the oil price, and decided to remain focused on North America, where the company is domiciled, which is how Europa came to pick up the stakes so cheaply. For Europa, the strategy is different. “We have an established exploration and production business here in the UK,” McKay told Proactive Investors. “For us, in times of capital constraint we prefer to focus on areas where we have expertise and a position,” McKay said. “We already know there is gas ‘on structure’ [onPEDL343]; the question is: can we flow at a commercial rate?” McKay said. As for PEDL299, this was discovered in 1919 in the first ever exploration well in the UK, and the plan here is to use modern techniques to see if the company can achieve a commercial oil flow rate.

Children of Piha and Karekare talk about the threat of seabed mining off their beach. The Government has issued exploration licences for seabed mining just off the majority of the North Island's west coast. Companies are about to apply for licences to mine. If this goes ahead, millions of tonnes of black sand will be dug up, destroying the seabed ecology, threatening the endangered maui's dolphin, surf breaks and causing coastal erosion. All for no maximum 5% revenue for NZ, and foreign-owned companies. It's not too late to stop this. Say no. http://www.kasm.org.nz Many thanks to our suppliers: Gavin & Matt @ Rocket Rentals, Jerry Roelants, Dennis Thompson @ the Dolly Shop, Brian Harris and Fergus Milner as well as our great volunteer crew and the fabulous children of Piha.

Kaloti gold refinery has been accused of flouting international rules aimed at stopping trade in so-called conflict gold, amid claims it paid more than $5bn in cash for the precious metal and accepted gold from more than 1,000 customers without paperwork. While there was no evidence that Kaloti accepted conflict gold, it is claimed they paid cash to Sudanese suppliers who had hand-carried gold to Dubai that was sourced from small-scale, artisan mining operations without checking for mining licenses, and is also accused of also taking millions of dollars of gold plated in another metal and seemingly smuggled out of Morocco. Since its inception, ONGC has been instrumental in transforming the country's limited upstream sector into a large viable playing field, with its activities spread throughout India and significantly in overseas territories. In the inland areas, ONGC not only found new resources in Assam but also established new oil province in Cambay basin (Gujarat), while adding new petroliferous areas in the Assam-Arakan Fold Belt and East coast basins (both inland and offshore). ONGC went offshore in early 70's and discovered a giant oil field in the form of Bombay High, now known as Mumbai High. This discovery, along with subsequent discoveries of huge oil and gas fields in Western offshore changed the oil scenario of the country. Subsequently, over 5 billion tonnes of hydrocarbons, which were present in the country, were discovered. The most important contribution of ONGC, however, is its self-reliance and development of core competence in E&P activities at a globally competitive level. Today, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC) is, the leader in Exploration & Production (E&P) activities in India contributing 72 per cent to India’s total production of crude oil and 48 per cent of natural gas. ONGC’s quest for energy goes deeper than setting new benchmarks in deep-water drilling in the Krishna Godavari Basin or finding new frontiers of energy. Global decline in crude prices notwithstanding, we have taken significant investment decisions diligently and aggressively, reversing the production trend in offshore. And now we are venturing into deeper offshore plays in our quest for energy security. It is this journey that has placed us among FortuneWorld’s Most Admired Companies” and ranked us 3rd in the E&P industry globally on the Platts Top 250 Rankings 2014. Actually, then ATO Commissioner, Michael Carmody, spruiked AUSTRAC in 2003, too, but that didn't seem to help them stop the Trio Capital scam, revealed by a private financial blogger six years later, in 2009!
