  • The Rise and Fall of Seadrill

www.rigwire.net - On Sept. 18 2013, shares of offshore rig operator Seadrill Limited recorded their highest-ever closing price of about $47.78 a share. About nine months later, the crude oil market started trending downward, with Brent crude oil reaching a 10-year low of about $29.8 per barrel within the first few months of 2016. The oil market crash would crash Seadrill's stock as well. Seadrill stock currently trades in its lowest price range ever: around 43 cents a share. This investopedia article looks at Seadrill’s rise and fall. Seadrill’s fleet of rigs had more demand on an overall basis when compared with Transocean on the basis of percentage of rig days that committed as of Dec. 31, 2009 for the years 2010, 2011 and 2012. Shale’s parent company has changed strategy in the wake of the precipitous decline in the oil price, and decided to remain focused on North America, where the company is domiciled, which is how Europa came to pick up the stakes so cheaply. So what resources are they devoting to mining the AUSTRAC data now? I suggested 500-1000 volunteers, doing it for no up-front payment, whatsoever. What's wrong with that?

What is SAND MINING? What does SAND MINING mean? SAND MINING meaning - SAND MINING definition - SAND MINING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Sand mining is a practice that is used to extract sand, mainly through an open pit. However, sand is also mined from beaches, inland dunes and dredged from ocean beds and river beds. It is often used in manufacturing as an abrasive, for example, and it is used to make concrete. It is also used in cold regions to put on the roads by municipal plow trucks to help icy and snowy driving conditions, usually mixed with salt or another mixture to lower the freezing temperature of the road surface (have the precipitations freeze at a lower temperature). Sand dredged from the mouths of rivers can also be used to replace eroded coastline. Another reason for sand mining is the extraction of minerals such as rutile, ilmenite and zircon, which contain the industrially useful elements titanium and zirconium. These minerals typically occur combined with ordinary sand, which is dug up, the valuable minerals being separated in water by virtue of their different densities, and the remaining ordinary sand re-deposited. Sand mining is a direct cause of erosion, and also impacts the local wildlife. For example, sea turtles depend on sandy beaches for their nesting, and sand mining has led to the near extinction of gharials (a species of crocodiles) in India. Disturbance of underwater and coastal sand causes turbidity in the water, which is harmful for such organisms as corals that need sunlight. It also destroys fisheries, causing problems for people who rely on fishing for their livelihoods. Removal of physical coastal barriers such as dunes leads to flooding of beachside communities, and the destruction of picturesque beaches causes tourism to dissipate. Sand mining is regulated by law in many places, but is still often done illegally.

Since its inception, ONGC has been instrumental in transforming the country's limited upstream sector into a large viable playing field, with its activities spread throughout India and significantly in overseas territories. In the inland areas, ONGC not only found new resources in Assam but also established new oil province in Cambay basin (Gujarat), while adding new petroliferous areas in the Assam-Arakan Fold Belt and East coast basins (both inland and offshore). This discovery, along with subsequent discoveries of huge oil and gas fields in Western offshore changed the oil scenario of the country. Subsequently, over 5 billion tonnes of hydrocarbons, which were present in the country, were discovered. The most important contribution of ONGC, however, is its self-reliance and development of core competence in E&P activities at a globally competitive level. Today, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC) is, the leader in Exploration & Production (E&P) activities in India contributing 72 per cent to India’s total production of crude oil and 48 per cent of natural gas. ONGC’s quest for energy goes deeper than setting new benchmarks in deep-water drilling in the Krishna Godavari Basin or finding new frontiers of energy. Global decline in crude prices notwithstanding, we have taken significant investment decisions diligently and aggressively, reversing the production trend in offshore. And now we are venturing into deeper offshore plays in our quest for energy security. It is this journey that has placed us among FortuneWorld’s Most Admired Companies” and ranked us 3rd in the E&P industry globally on the Platts Top 250 Rankings 2014. Actually, then ATO Commissioner, Michael Carmody, spruiked AUSTRAC in 2003, too, but that didn't seem to help them stop the Trio Capital scam, revealed by a private financial blogger six years later, in 2009! It involved Hong Kong crooks obtaining an Aussie Financial Services Licence & using it to siphon $175m to offshore tax havens, never to be seen again! So what resources are they devoting to mining the AUSTRAC data now? I suggested 500-1000 volunteers, doing it for no up-front payment, whatsoever. What's wrong with that?
